Muhammad Ali goes home

Muhammad Ali was laid to rest on Thursday in the first of two public memorials planned for this week.
Fourteen thousand people attended a traditional Muslim prayer service at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY – where the boxing legend’s life and legacy were honoured by those closest to him.
Imam Zaid Shakir told mourners that the thousands of mourners from many different faiths were a testament to Ali’s influence as a social activist and sporting icon.
“We welcome all of you here. All were beloved to Muhammad Ali,” Imam Shakir told those in attendance.
Today, Will Smith and Lennox Lewis will serve as pallbearers for a second memorial service to be held at Louisville’s KFC Yum! Center.
The ceremony will include eulogies from Ali’s close friend Billy Crystal and former US president Bill Clinton, as well as legendary journalist and former Today Show anchor Bryant Gumbel, Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Fans around the world will be able to live stream Friday’s memorial service via the Muhammad Ali Center.
Ali passed away from septic shock last Friday in Phoenix, Arizona, five days after being hospitalised for a respiratory condition.
