The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Thursday failed to heed the summons of the Senate over the saga involving the representative of Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye.
The Senate had on Wednesday summoned Idris after exhaustive debate on the Melaye issue.
However, instead of appearing in person, Idris sent the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations), Joseph Habilla, to represent him.
But the senators were angry over Idris’s failure to appear in person.
Some senators like Ibn Bala Na’Allah, Sam Egwu, Godswill Akpabio and Emmanuel Bwacha said the failure of the number one police officer in the country to appear before the Senate was a disrespect to the institution.
Bwacha said: “This is not a military regime.
“This is a democracy.
“We do not treat each arm of Government as independent as we should in a democracy.
“This is why we are where we are today.”
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Abu Ibrahim, had informed the Senate that the IGP was in Bauchi State on an official visit.
After exhaustive debate on his absence, the Senate mandated the IGP to appear next week Wednesday.
