Nigerian carrier, Max Air, has confirmed that the air return of its Flight VM1623, with registration number 5N-BBM, to Maiduguri International Airport was initiated after an engine abnormality was detected during takeoff.
The Eagle Online reports that a Max Air aircraft en route Abuja, on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, suffered engine failure caused by a bird strike about 10 minutes into the flight.
Also, Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Kadafur, and over 100 passengers were reportedly aboard the aircraft.
Confirming the development in a statement on Thursday, the airline explained that the aircraft experienced an abnormality in its engine parameters during ascent, prompting the captain to initiate a precautionary air return.
The airline confirmed that all passengers and crew members aboard were unharmed.
Max Air extended apologies for any inconvenience caused and expressed gratitude for the patience and understanding of affected passengers.

It emphasised its collaboration with aviation authorities to investigate the cause of the engine anomaly.

The statement reads: “Following Standard Operational Procedures, the affected engine was shut down as a precaution, allowing the aircraft to make a safe landing back at the airport.
“In a swift response to minimise disruptions, MaxAir dispatched a rescue aircraft to Maiduguri, ensuring that passengers reached their destinations with minimal delay.
“MaxAir is committed to the safety and comfort of our passengers. We are working closely with aviation authorities to investigate the cause of the engine abnormality and ensure such occurrences are mitigated in the future.
