There are indications that Senator Heineken Lokpobiri may become the country’s next Minister of Sports.
Lokpobir became a senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District in 2007 and was appointed into various committees, including sports.
Following the poor performance of the Super Eagles at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, the Senate Sports Committee, of which Lokpobiri was chairman, issued a report which cast blame on maladministration and lack of cooperation from the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Dr. Amos Adamu.
Lokpobiri also accused the Nigeria Football Federation of “celebrating failure” over its decision to hand a new contract to Coach Stephen Keshi.
He stated that the Nigeria Football Federation was playing politics with the job of the coach when the man failed to lead the Super Eagles to the last Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.
Lokpobiri was the speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly from June 1999 to May 2001.
In the Senate, he was appointed to committees on Sports, Public Accounts, Police Affairs, Niger Delta and Millennium Development Goals.
Lokpobiri holds an LL.B (Hons) in 1994 from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt.
