It appears Arsene Wenger wasn’t joking when he declared “it’s close, to be closed” when pressed about Laurent Koscielny’s new contract yesterday, as the Frenchman today signed on a new long-term deal with Arsenal.
The club have revealed their official website that the 28-year-old has indeed signed on a new contract, although they have yet to disclose information regarding the terms of the deal.
The France international centre-back has been a rock at the heart of the Arsenal backline this season, forming a partnership with Per Mertesacker that many believe to be the best in the Premier League.
Koscielny becomes the eighth Arsenal player to commit himself to the club long-term this season, following in the footsteps of Santi Cazorla, Serge Gnabry, Per Mertesacker, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky,Wojciech Szczesny and Gedion Zelalem, all of whom signed new deals this season.
Arsene Wenger was full of praise for Koscielny following the announcement of his new deal as he said: “Laurent has proven himself to be an outstanding player since joining us in 2010 and has showed his quality once again this season. I am delighted he has decided to commit his future to the Club.”
Meanwhile Koscielny expressed his excitement over signing a new contract as he said: “I am very proud to have reached agreement with the Club on a new contract. I have enjoyed four great years at Arsenal already, and I look forward to continuing to help the team in the years to come.”
