A whopping sum of $80,000 has been set aside as prize money for the 15th edition of the Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship, slated for between December 5 and 19 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
The Local Organising Committee Chairman, Chief Pius Akinyelure, disclosed this in Lagos on Tuesday at a media parley held to herald this year’s edition of the tournament.
According to Akinyelure, the championship is made up of futures 3 and futures 4 spanning the two-week duration.
$40,000 would be won per futures tournament, while the women get $50,000 as prize money.
The LOC boss added that players will be competing in four events: men singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles and women’s doubles.
Akinyelure said: “Entries are open to both local and foreign players many of who have been besieging us with enquires about the championship. We are hoping this year to top our previous record of entries from twenty four countries worldwide.”
Speaking further, Akinyelure commended the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, for continuing from where his predecessors left off.
