The Lagos State Government had directed the Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University, Prof. John Obafunwa, to reinstate the stopped check-off dues of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, LASU Chapter.
The directive was contained in a letter addressed to the VC, a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos.
The letter, dated February 25, was signed by the Special Adviser on Education to Governor Babatunde Fashola, Chief Fatai Olukoga.
The state government, in the letter, said the collection of check-off dues by employers was a statutory responsibility and non-negotiable.
The government referred the VC to a letter dated February 18 by ASUU-LASU to the Commissioner, Ministry of Establishment, Training and Pensions, informing him of the unlawful stoppage of the union’s check-off dues.
According to the letter, ASUU complained that the stoppage had affected the collection of check-off dues for three months – November and December 2014, as well as January 2015.
It said the letter by ASUU-LASU claimed that the university authority had informed the union that subsequent deductions had been stopped.
Olukoga said in the letter to Obafunwa: “Deduction of check-off dues is guaranteed by a provision of the Trade Unions Act of the Labour Law Union.
“For the avoidance of doubt, please refer to Nigeria Labour Law Chapter 14 Trade Unions (Act), Section 17 a and b.
“In view of the above, and in the interest of industrial harmony and governance, you are requested to comply immediately with the provisions of the Law and reinstate the deduction of ASUU-LASU check-off dues.”
Meanwhile, the Chairman of ASUU-LASU chapter, Dr. Adekunle Idris, had confirmed to NAN that the university administration had reinstated the unions check-off due in February, in compliance with the government’s directive.
Idris lauded the state government’s intervention and ensuring the reinstatement of the check-off dues.
