The Action Congress of Nigeria in Ondo State has described as desperate and disappointing the antics of Governor Olusegun Mimiko and the Labour Party for allegedly locking up the party’s secretariat, with the police and other security agents keeping watch to prevent its being served court summons from the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Akure, the state capital.
A statement by Idowu Ajanaku, the Director of Media, Publicity and Strategy of the governorship candidate of the ACN in the election, Barrister Rotimi Akeredolu, alleged that Mimiko and the LP have been evading service of the summon from the Tribunal as an antic to buy time, perhaps to make sure the case is not disposed off within the constitutionally accepted period.
Ajanaku said: “The ACN supporters and indeed Nigerians would want to ask Gov. Mimiko if he was sure that he won the election why is he afraid of court summons. Why is he running away from his shadows? He should be prepared prove to the world that he won the election clean square.
“The ACN is committed to pursuing the tribunal case to a logical conclusion. We have the responsibility of informing our numerous supporters in Ondo State, Nigeria and the world at large on why we are in court and this is what we have done. We owe no apologies to spin doctors employed by Mimiko to challenge our inalienable right which was not denied him in 2009 when he was fighting to recover its mandate.
“It is sad that the LP’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Femi Okunjemiruwa, missed the point by alluding ‘to an era when the judiciary was under the cash and carry characters of old. and the era of judgment purchase.’ We call on Okunjemirruwa to name the characters he was referring to and the judgment that was purchased. Is he saying that the Mimiko victory in the courts in 2009 was purchased?
“What we are saying is that the LP has committed electoral fraud in Ondo State and should be ready to defend itself both at the tribunal and the court of public opinion.”
