The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State, Iyiola Oyedepo, on Monday said the party was targeting N600 million from the annual contributions of members.
Oyedepo made this known in Ilorin when he addressed the party’s stakeholders in the state.
The chairman urged members to demonstrate more commitment to the party, saying it would not allow any group to promote factional interests.
He said: “The philosophy behind this idea of membership financial commitment through annual contribution is to create responsible, committed and proud members of the party.
“We want members that will be desirous of continually working for the success of the party.”
Oyedepo, who promised to run an all inclusive administration, said the ban on factional interests was to instil unity of purpose that would ensure success in the general elections.
He added: “Factional interest, if allowed, will tear the party apart.
“If we are divided, we shall not be able to chase the ruling APC out of power in Kwara State.
“This is why we have banned all interests that will not align with the party’s structure that we have jointly put together.”
Oyedepo, who announced a ban on membership of both the Unity and Freedom groups in the party, also said: “If we desire to run all inclusive party administration and we are doing just that, why should any group still stand up to promote factional interests when we have enough assignments for all.
“If we are to prevent division in this party, then the leadership at this level must just be responsible enough not only to shun divisive tendencies but most consciously work for unity within the party.”
Oyedepo also said all associations formed to further the cause of the party would be registered and their programmes and activities vetted.
He said aspirants wishing to contest elective offices could, however, form their campaign outfits.
The chairman said once candidates of the party emerged after the primaries, all campaign outfits would be collapsed to ensure victory of the flag bearer at the polls.
Oyedepo warned that discipline would be strictly enforced, saying the party had domesticated its manifesto in order to address specific issues unique to the state.
“We are accustomed in Kwara to politics without message, philosophy and programme,” Oyedepo said.
The chairman, however, said the purpose of domesticating the party manifesto was to change the practice of politics devoid of contents in the state.
“We shall, with this document, sign a pact with the people and use it to sensitise, mobilise and organise the people on the party’s programmes of freeing the state from bondage,” Oyedepo said.
