IPCR to partner with 600 volunteers to broker peace in Adamawa

The Institute For Peace and Conflict Resolution on Monday disclosed that as part of its peace development and infrastructure building, it has earmarked over 600 volunteers that will be responsible for peace mediation in Adamawa State.
The Director-General of the institute, Prof. Oshita O. Oshita, who made the disclosure during an official visit to Governor Muhammadu Umaru Jibrilla in the Government House in Yola, said no fewer than 600 peace volunteers would  be despatched to the various parts of Adamawa State as peace mediators.
Oshita said that as part of the peace infrastructure, IPCR intends to partner with the various stakeholders in the different sectors of the country, including the academia, the media, traditional institutions, security and a host of others on how best to broker peace in the various segments of the country.
Partnering with the education sector, Oshita said, would involve reviewing the curriculum contents at the primary, secondary and the tertiary levels by injecting peace contents in the curriculum, which would form part of the the desired infrastructure.
The Director-General enjoined the Nigerian media to join in the peace infrastructure of the institute with the aim of projecting the different approaches to peace being employed to resolve conflicts across the various segments of the Nigerian society.
According to him,the institute will as well organize workshops for journalists, traditional institutions on the intention of the government and its agencies to partner with them on conflict resolution from the lowest levels of the Nigerian society.
Oshita also disclosed that the institute has been in partnership with United Nations High Commission for Refugees, especially in the North East region of the countr,y that is ravaged by insurgency, and some parts of the northern parts of the country that is experiencing conflicts between graziers and farmers.
Responding, Jibrilla underscored the importance of the Institute For Peace and Conflict Resolution, adding that it was an institute the Adamawa State Government would like to identify with.
Represented by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of the state, Barrister Bala Silas Sanga, Jibrilla said the state is blessed with over 86 different ethnic groups, whose cultural affinities have been a binding force of unity, but made bold to say that scarce resources were major cause of conflicts in the state.
