The International Organisation for Migration has concluded arrangements to hold a high-level sensitisation workshop for traditional and religious leaders on promoting safe migration practices and supporting the reintegration of returning migrants in Abuja.
The event, the first of its kind in Nigeria, will aim to sensitize participants on the current trends of irregular migration, including human trafficking in Nigeria, and provide participants with tools on how to identify victims of trafficking, report these cases through the relevant mechanisms and support the social and psychosocial reintegration of Nigerian migrants returning home to their communities.
Additionally, the workshop, which holds on May 7 and 8, 2019, is geared towards building synergies between government and non-government actors active on irregular migration, human trafficking and reintegration of migrants and the traditional and religious leaders, thereby providing a sense of ownership.
The event is organized under the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration, funded by the European Union.
Sixty participants are expected to attend.
The EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration brings together the Government of Nigeria, IOM and the EU, with the aim of strengthening mechanisms to protect and assist migrants along migration routes, ensuring that migrants’ rights are respected, and that the migration process is safer and better governed.
The EU-IOM Joint Initiative is funded by the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa, which covers 26 African countries, including Nigeria.
