Insecurity: NUP wants recruitment of more police personnel

The National Chairman, National Unity Party, Chief Perry Opara, has advised the Federal Government to recruit more personnel into the Nigeria Police Force to address insecurity in the country.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja, Opara identified inadequate police personnel as one of the major challenges of tackling insecurity in the country.
He said there were many unemployed youths in the country that could be recruited to address the manpower challenge of the police.
Opara said: “The intake into the police college should be increased. I have been to some countries in the world where it takes you about half a pole to see a policeman.
“The presence of a policeman in uniform, whether he is armed or not, scares criminal elements.
“In Nigeria, for instance in the vicinity where we are here, we are more than 200 people but you hardly see one police around; this promotes crime.”
Opara also stressed the need for better welfare for the police to boost their morale.
He said: “Our policemen need to be paid well so that they don’t look the other way.
“If a policeman is comfortable he will resist temptation to a large extent, but when he is in the street with an empty stomach, what do you expect him to do?”
Opara also canvassed for more recruitment of personnel into the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
He added: “Employ more people and send them for training to be able to manage the security of the country.”
