Hon. Zakari Mohammed, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Media and Public Affairs, has said the House would use its oversight power to ensure the full implementation of the 2014 budget.
Mohammed made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Gure, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State.
According to him, eight months is enough to implement the 2014 budget.
He said: “For me, one of the responsibilities of the legislature is power of oversight.
“And having appropriated fund, we need to strengthen oversight functions.
“For us in the Seventh Assembly, we have tried as much as possible to do just that, but that is not to say that we are there yet.
“What is very important is that we have been able to show that with the power of oversight, you can be able to do a lot of things.
“We will make sure we use the power of oversight to ensure the budget is well implemented.
“The excuse of ministries, department and agencies and the executive arm that budget was passed late is not an issue because they still have about eight months to implement the 2014 budget.”
The House spokesman also urged the executive arm to ensure that the budget was implemented.
