A governorship aspirant in Anambra State, Udo Udeogaranya, has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for establishing economic ties with the Republic of China.
Udeogaranya, in a statement on Friday, said that Nigeria stood to benefit a lot from the relationship with China.
He urged Jonathan to properly situate the industries the Chinese would be establishing in Nigeria.
For instance, he suggested that the Nigeria-China Direct Trade Zone should be located along the River Niger basin in Anambra State.
His argument was that this is within the domain of Nigerian traders.
His statement on Friday reads in full: “The initiative by the Nigerian government to meet with the Chinese government at the highest level alongside with leaders of private sectors, is perhaps the most welcome foreign visit led by President Goodluck Jonathan and it is expected to yield much economic results.
“While being supportive of the visit, I would like President Jonathan and his ministerial team to push for establishment of a Nigeria-China Direct Trade Zone in Nigeria. That is to carve out a secure small new town accessible to seaport, where Chinese selected essential goods manufacturers can ship, clear or manufacture and trade their high quality commodities to their African trading partners at a price rate lower than the price in China.
“A perfect site for the new Nigeria-China Direct Trade Zone, should be somewhere along the River Niger basin in Anambra State, within the domain of Nigerian traders.
“Nigeria-China Direct Trade Zone will force African, Middle East and some European markets to source high quality Chinese goods in Nigeria and the huge sum of foreign exchange and other costs expended by the Nigerian traders to travel and import goods from China will be drastically reduced, as they can find those goods in Nigeria at a lower rate with higher quality.
“The Presidential team should also look into the issue of population control and see what they can learn to help manage our surging population before it runs out of control.”
