The National Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday that food beverages and tobacco activities recorded the highest output in the manufacturing sector between 2010 and 2012.
In a statement in Abuja, the Statistician-General of the Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale, said the formal manufacturing sector was dominated by output from the food beverages and tobacco production with N4.9 billion or 72.02 per cent in 2010.
Kale said in spite of the growth of N488.8 million or 9.91 per cent in 2011 and N712.7 million or 13.15 per cent in 2012, “the total output share declined to 66.32 per cent and 62.42 per cent in 2011 and 2012”.
The statement said the second largest contributor to manufacturing was textile, apparel and footwear production, which was N792.6 million in 2010, representing 11.58 per cent of total output.
It stated that the activity’s contribution to manufacturing stood at N398.1 million, representing 50.21 per cent in 2011 and N462.1 million, representing 38.81 per cent in 2012.
Kale added in the statement: “Other manufacturing and non-metallic products were the third and fourth greatest contributors with N392.3 million, representing 11.58 per cent over the period.
“Basic Metals, iron and steel exhibited the fastest rate of growth over the period, increasing by N77.2 million or 77.03 per cent in 2011, from the N100.2 million recorded in 2010 to N177.4 million in 2011.”
It said there was no activity that recorded negative output growth between 2010 and 2012.
“Although the lowest growth rate of 9.91 per cent was recorded for the food, beverages and tobacco activity in 2011, absolute output still increased by an impressive N488.8 million,” it said.
