Etsu Nupe charges politicians to fulfill campaign promises

Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu Nupe and Chairman, Niger State Traditional Council, has admonished politicians to fulfill their campaign promises when elected into public offices.
The traditional ruler gave the charge on Thursday in Abuja at the public presentation of a book titled “Leadership, Culture and Ethics in Nigeria”.
The 191-page book is written by Dr Ferdinand Anikwe, the Director-General, Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization, a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture.
The monarch, who was represented by Alhaji Aliyu Galadima, a senior Councillor at the Etsu Nupe’s palace said promises are debts that should be redeemed.
Abubakar said: “It is wrong when promises are made during campaigns and hardly do you meet up to 25 per cent of the promises to the electorate.
“If you promise something and by the time you get to office, you have to at least make conscious effort to do as much as you can to speed up the pace.’’
The monarch stressed the need to educate people on the importance of culture and ethics, the primary responsibility of CBAAC.
He said that traditional institutions were also saddled with the responsibility of inculcating moral values, culture and ethics at the grassroots.
The monarch added that the traditional institutions were also in the fore front of the daunting task of ensuring unity and peaceful co-existence in the country.
He commended CBAAC for effective discharge of its statutory roles and expressed delight at the Ministry of Information and Culture’s promise to support the centre.
