The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Wednesday said the Liberian Ebola Virus Disease victim who died in Nigeria, Patrick Sawyer, was aware he had the virus before leaving his country for Nigeria.
Chukwu said that Sawyer defied medical advice not to embark on the journey to Nigeria.
The minister, who briefed the House of Representatives’ Committee on Health on the outbreak of the EVD in Nigeria, said Sawyer “knew he was sick” before embarking on the journey to Nigeria.
No fewer than nine of those Sawyer had contact with are either dead or down with illness.
One of the nurses who attended to him at the hospital where he was treated in Lagos, died on Tuesday.
Chukwu confirmed this at a media briefing on Wednesday morning.
A doctor at the hospital is also down with the virus.
Chukwu equally revealed that seven other persons are down with the symptoms of the fast spreading disease in the West African sub-region.
