A 45-year-old man and his wife, Timothy and Mary Danladi, who allegedly defrauded a land buyer in Kaduna of N3.8 million have been arraigned on Tuesday before a Kaduna State High Court.
The couple, of Ungwan Maigero, were charged with conspiracy, fraud and obtaining money under false pretenses.
They were arraigned by the Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The EFCC prosecutor, Precious Onyeneho, told the court that the defendants committed the offences sometime in October 2023.
Onyeneho told the court that while acting as agents, the defendants dishonestly misappropriated the sum of N3.8 million given to them by Solomon Titus.
The prosecutor said the N3.8 million was for the payment of the purchase of farmland situated at Ungwan Makama, Old Kamazoa, Kaduna.
He also said the defendants diverted the said the money to their personal use, and all efforts made by the complainant to get his money back or the farmland proved abortive.
Onyeneho said the defendants committed an offence contrary to the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
In view of the defendants’ plea, the prosecution prayed the court to give a date for the commencement of trial and remand the defendants in a Correctional Centre.
The defence counsel, Esther James, urged the court to grant the defendants bail.
Justice Darius Khobo granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
