The Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos will on Sunday evening see the return of elite professional boxing, as GOtv Boxing Night 7 holds.
Each of the 12 boxers participating in the six-fight will be eyeing the N1 million cash prize for the best boxer of the evening and the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy.
The biggest fight of the night is the national lightweight title bout between reigning champion, Nurudeen “Prince” Fatai and Oto “Joe Boy” Joseph.
The fight, which had twice been postponed, promises an explosion of fistic grudge and fury.
Both boxers met in a national challenge contest at GOtv Boxing Night 4, with Joe Boy winning via a fifth-round knockout.
The defeat, unsurprisingly, has left Fatai bearing a giant grudge arising from the feeling that a hand injury he was carrying helped Joe Boy.
“He won the fight,” Fatai said. “But it was because I fought with an injury. Now, the injury has gone and I have trained well and ready to make him pay.”
Joe Boy, however, is convinced that Fatai will fall again.
On a radio programme where the duo almost fought bare-knuckled, Joe Boy taunted the champion, saying: “I beat you in the past and will do so again even if you acquire four hands in addition to the two you already have. I will also win the N1million.”
The event is sponsored by GOtv and supported by MultiChoice, Paragonis Multimedia Limited, KSquare Security, Complete Sports, Brila FM, newsbreak.ng, Bond FM and SuperSport. SuperSport will broadcast it live in 47 African countries.
One of the five other fights also has the potential to catch fire like the main bout.
It is the national lightweight challenge contest between Osamudiamen “Chisel” Goodluck and Rilwan “Real One” Oladosu. Osamudiamen, a graduate of the GOtv Boxing NextGen Search, is familiar with his opponent. Both had clashed at amateurs, with Oladosu running away with victory. Oladosu has continued to remind Goodluck of that defeat, generously sprinkling grudge on the encounter.
In the heavyweight category, Ebenezer “Anambra Tiger” Okoli will face Abiodun “Finito Wonder” Afinnih, while Idowu “Noble Cabasa” Okusote will confront Chibuzor ‘Chibunky” Vincent in the cruiserweight category.
Lighting up the light welterweight category will be another discovery from the GOtv NextGen Search, Rilwan “Baby Face” Babatunde and Tope “Berinja” Agboola, while the middleweight category will see a clash between Chukwuebuka “Wise King” Ezewudo and Ganiyu “Energy” Kolawole, also products of the GOtv Boxing NextGen Search.
