The Borno State Government on Sunday commended the military for the professional manner it had handled the security challenges facing the state.
The state Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, made the commendation when he visited the newly established 81 battalion of the Nigerian Army in Gashigar town of Mobbar Local Government Area of the state.
Shettima reiterated his administration’s commitment to the fight against terrorism, promising to support the military.
He said: “My visit here is mainly to commend your numerous efforts in fighting terrorism.
“We are here to boost your morale.
“I want to assure that we are willing to provide additional support to enable you succeed in the task of making our society safe from terrorism.”
Shettima presented a cash gift to the battalion in appreciation of the efforts of officers and men.
Responding, the Commander of the battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Musa Mohammed, said that the unit was created after last month’s suspected terrorism attack, which claimed some lives and property.
Mohammed said that his men had already secured the environment, assuring Shettima that the battalion would strive hard to protect lives and property in the area.
The governor had earlier visited the scene of the attacks in Gashigar to sympathise with the victims.
Shettima who was vividly disturbed, urged them to consider the incident as an act of God.
He said government was already making arrangements to beef-up security in the area.
Shettima also appealed to individuals who fled to the neighbouring Niger Republic, to return home, adding that peace was gradually returning.
He presented relief materials worth millions of Naira to the victims, to ameliorate their sufferings.
Items presented included assorted grains, cooking oil, mats and cash donation of N10 million.
