Bayelsa community urges Agip to plug oil leak

The Ogbosuwari Community in Ekeremor Local Government Area in Bayelsa on Wednesday urged the Nigeria Agip Oil Company to stop oil leak in the area.
The Chairman of the community development committee, Okada Ezon-Abowei, told newsmen that the spill had exposed them to danger.
Ezon-Abowei called on the Federal Government and relevant agencies to stop the spill which started two weeks ago and ensure its immediate clean up.
He said that the source of livelihood of the people had been destroyed by the oil discharged into the environment.
The community leader called on relevant agencies of government, including their representative in the state assembly, Ball Oyarede, to intervene and give them relief.
Officials of NAOC and its parent company, Eni, declined to comment on the incident when contacted for comments.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of the Bayelsa chapter of the Artisanal Fishermen Association of Nigeria, Princess Elizabeth Egbe, said that her members in the area had been thrown out of business by the leak.
Egbe urged the oil firm to mobilise relief materials to the area and commence the clean-up of the spill site.
