Nigerian international, Shola Ameobi, has given a further indication he is ready to quit Newcastle United this summer by revealing a clause, which was preventing him from playing for Nigeria, is no longer in effect.
Last season, United blocked Nigeria’s bid to call up the big striker for the African Cup of Nations in South Africa.
However, Ameobi has hinted he will quit Newcastle to realise his World Cup dream with Nigeria next summer in Brazil.
The centre-forward knows he is not guaranteed first-team action at St James’ Park with Alan Pardew desperate to add two strikers to his squad this summer.
Ameobi said: “I have to get into this incredibly talented team, make sure I give my best, show my experience and make a significant contribution.
“I made my (Nigeria) debut at 31, now here I am and hopefully my experience will enable me to develop at this level.
“Every player is looking to play at the World Cup.
“I think we have every chance of qualifying – but we must fight and earn the right to be there.”
To do that, though and catch the eye of Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi, Ameobi requires first-team action and, after being made available by new director of football, Joe Kinnear, he is weighing his options.
Nigeria wanted Ameobi at the last African Cup of Nations last winter but United did not want to lose the striker during a serious injury crisis.
Ameobi said that clause “is no longer in effect,” suggesting pastures new could be on the cards.
Nigeria takes on South Africa in the Nelson Mandela Challenge on August 14 in Durban.
Ameobi sounds like a man who wants to be part of that friendly game.
He added: “My full focus is now on helping the Super Eagles to be successful.”
Ameobi’s only previous cap came last year when he starred for Nigeria against Venezuela in Miami, United States of America.
Ameobi set up his side’s third goal in a 3-1 victory against the South Americans.
