The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Tuesday said that his commission has started scrutinising the relevant documents submitted by the All Progressive Congress for registration.
Jega said as soon as the exercise is completed, the commission will let Nigerians know the outcome and the APC will know its fate.
Jega said this while fielding questions from newsmen at a one-day workshop organized by the United Development Programme and the Democratic Governance for Development Project in collaboration with Inter-Party Advisory Council on the revalidation of the reviewed code of conduct for political parties in Minna, the Niger State capital.
According to him: “The commission is assiduously working on all documents submitted by APC and as soon as we finish scrutinising all relevant information and documents submitted.
“We will let Nigerians know of the outcome and APC will know its fate.”
Jega said the reviewed code of conduct is the new framework for ensuring that politics in the country is violence free, adding that INEC and all political parties in the country have accepted and validated the new document as an instrument for governing the conduct of political parties activities in the country.
According to him: “The major changes adopted in the new code of conduct was the expansion of the Central Working Committee of IPAC from two to seven members.
“This created an avenue for many parties to be represented.”
Jega added that contrary to the 2011 election code of conduct where punishments were not stipulated on offences committed by any political party, in the revised version, punishments to be administered were clearly spelt out for any erring party.
Jega said already, 20 out 25 political parties present at the workshop had signed the validation of the new code of conduct as a generally accepted document for guiding political parties in the 2015 general election.
He expressed optimism that the others will sign the document within the next one week.
Also speaking to newsmen at the workshop on the registration of APC, the Secretary General of Congress for progressive Change, Buba Galadima, said the proposed opposition party had submitted all that was required of it to INEC two weeks ago.
