The trial of Umar Abubakar, facing alleged charges related to job racketeering and forgery, has been stalled following his failure to appear before the Adamawa State High Court in Yola.
Abubakar was arrested by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in a sting operation in 2022.
He was arraigned on June 1, 2023, before Hon. Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman on a three-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence, fraudulent document creation, and corruptly receiving a benefit in exchange for employment.
According to the ICPC, in April 2022, Abubakar falsely claimed he had high-level connections in the Presidency and induced one Mr. Kabiru Musa to pay N100,000 in exchange for a job placement at the ICPC.
He was further alleged to have presented a forged temporary appointment letter, purportedly signed by the ICPC Chairman, to deceive the victim.

At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, defence counsel Mr. A.U. Sangere informed the court that his client was unable to attend because he had travelled.
He assured the court that the defendant would be present at the next sitting.
ICPC’s prosecuting counsel, Mr. T.S. Iorngee, requested two clear dates to ensure the case’s expeditious handling.
Justice Abdulrahman adjourned the matter to June 3 and 4, 2025, for the continuation of the trial.
