Governor Godswill Akpabio of akwa Ibom State has expressed worry over constant harassment, illegal detention and murder of Akwa Ibom State indigenes in the Diaspora.
Akpabio, who stated this Sunday when executive members of the Akwa Ibom Community in Lagos State, led by its President, Elijah Ifot, paid him a courtesy visit at the Governor’s Lodge, Uyo, said he was worried by news of illegal detention of a 19-year-old Akwa Ibom lady for four years without trial for alleged theft of handset and murder of a three-year-old Akwa Ibom child in Lagos State.
The governor emphasised the need to partner the body in addressing crucial issues affecting the indigenes and touching lives of Akwa Ibom people living in Lagos.
He said: “The state government will partner you to touch the lives of our citizens in Lagos and that statement is pregnant with a lot of meaning.
“We will give you support for the multi-purpose co-operative society you have set up.
“We will give you support for your headquarters.
”Educationally and in terms of small scale, it is very important that you give small financial assistance to those who need such assistance.
“It can turn around their businesses, it can also stop them from drifting into crime and the spoiling the good name of the state.
“We will also support the educational programme because it very important that wherever our children are, they should receive education and I think this is what the organization should do.”
Akpabio, who advised them to be their brother’s keeper, promised to visit them in Lagos State to see the proposed site for Akwa Ibom Hall in Surulere.
He also thanked members of the association for coming to identify with his administration.
Ifot lauded the state government for its transformation policy and described the governor as a shinning star worth emulating.
