Suspected members of ritual gang, Badoo, on Sunday morning attacked a family at Lajo village in Ibeshe, Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
The attack, which was said to have occurred around 3am, left the man, simply identified as Shakiru, his wife and six-month-old baby critically injured.
It was learnt that alarm raised by Shakiru’s neighbour attracted the attention of other residents of the community who surrounded the area in search of the suspects that night.
The family was said to have been attacked by two men who gained entry into their apartment after breaking one of their windows.
The elders of the community were said to have immediately notified the local vigilantes about the incident and the victims were rushed to the hospital.
A resident, who simply identified himself as Adetunji, said the attack occurred around 3am.
Adetunji said: “The man is known as Shakiru and popularly called Shakur in the community.
“He was attacked by two Badoo members when they were sleeping and they were immediately rushed to the hospital, but we later heard the man died.
“His wife and child are in the hospital.
“We could not sleep anymore.
“People were shouting Badoo Badoo and that was how everyone came out to hunt them.
“The Badoo were two men.
“One of them fled into a thick bush.
“The other one was not lucky as he was caught.
“People descended on him and asked him to disclose the names of their sponsors.
“After much beating, he started talking.
“He mentioned one Baba Noah.
“But when angry youths went to look for the man, he had fled.
“They wanted to lynch the suspect, but the police came to the scene and said they were called by the Baale to take the suspect.”
Adetunji said the police took him away, adding: “The mob injured the suspect on the leg.
“There was tension in the area because the people do not have confidence in the police.”
Another resident, who did not want his name in print, said they thought the ritual killer had gone for good but the reverse is the case now.
He said: “The attack on the family came to everybody in the community as a surprise.
“Less than 24 hours to 2018, the ritual killers came and killed a promising young man and injured his wife and son.
“We are in sad mood in our community now.
“How do we celebrate New year when Badoo has killed one of us.
“Government should intensify more efforts to get rid of the killers in the state.”
