The Ogun State Police Command has successfully averted a bloodbath that would have resulted from a farmers/herders clash following an incident involving the destruction of farmland in Ilupeju Ibaro Village, Abeokuta, the state capital, by cows.
The spokesperson of the Command and a Chief Superintendent of Police, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the development on Monday.
According to Odutola, on January 17, 2025, a report was received by the Divisional Police Officer of Ilupeju Division from Okegbenro Julius of Favour Community Development Association, Imala Elega, regarding the intentional damage to his five-hectare rice plantation by herdsmen.
According to Julius, at approximately 6pm, a group of herdsmen with a large number of cows invaded his farm and caused extensive destruction to his crops.
A security guard employed on the farm documented the incident via video recording.

Upon realising that they were being observed, the herdsmen fled the scene, taking most of their cows with them.
However, one cow was detained in the process.
In response to the incident, the Command’s Commissioner, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, took decisive action to prevent any escalation of conflict.
The CP directed the DPO to convene an emergency meeting with relevant stakeholders, including community leaders and representatives from both the farming and herding communities.
Ogunlowo reassured residents of Ogun State that the police are committed to ensuring peace and adequate safety for all citizens, adding that the Police will continue to engage all parties involved to foster understanding and prevent conflicts.
Odutola added: “The Ogun State Police Command remains vigilant and dedicated to upholding law and order, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts between farmers and herders to maintain peaceful coexistence in the community.
“Members of the community are urged to report any suspicious activities or conflicts promptly to the police, as collaboration with the police is essential to fostering a secure environment for everyone.”
