Thirty-five children have been confirmed dead in the stampede that occurred in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, at a children’s funfair as the police confirmed the arrest of Naomi Silekunola, a former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Fasasi Abdulahi.
This was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, Adewale Osifeso, in a statement he issued on Thursday.
According to Osifeso, a Superintendent of Police, Silekunola, 31, and Abdulahi, 56, were among those arrested for the stampede at the children’s carnival organised by the wife of the Ooni of Ife on December 18, 2024 at the Islamic High School.
Osifeso, who said eight persons have so far been arrested, adding: “The other individuals arrested include Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin, with ages ranging from 25 to 52 years.”

According to the Police Public Relations Officier, six other injured children reported are in critical conditions.
He said: “So far, 35 minors have been documented dead while 6 others are critically injured.”
