The Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Olayinka Oladunjoye, has charged students in the state to imbibe the culture of frequent hand washing with soap and clean water as a precursor to the spread of disease, particularly the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.
Oladunjoye said this on Wednesday at a symbolic hand washing exercise organised by the United Nations Information Centre in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Education to commemorate year 2014 Global Hand Washing Day Celebration at the premises of Falomo Senior Secondary School, Ikoyi.
The Commissioner reiterated the need for students to maintain a good personal and environmental hygiene, stressing that the outcome of their academic performances depends largely on their state of health.
She further admonished them to be focused and pay adequate attention to their teachers and parents among others in order for them to achieve their academic goals.
Oladunjoye remarked: “You can only be what you want to be through hard work and determination as there is no short cut to success.
“I therefore urge you to work hard in your study as that is the only route to attaining success in life.”
Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Health, Dr. Yewande Adeshina, also advised students to always wash their hands with soap and clean water.
Adeshina said that it is the simplest, cheapest and fastest way of checking the spread of any disease, including the Ebola Virus.
Adeshina charged the students at the event to be ambassadors of hand washing as they are expected to pass on the message to their peers in other schools and immediate communities.
The Representative of United Nations Information Centre, Envera Selimovic, expressed her delight in joining the students to celebrate the Global Hand Washing Day.
Selimovic attributed the remarkable success attained in the curtailment of the EVD in the state to the pro-activeness of the state government.
She enjoined everybody to key into the strategy of frequent hand washing as a means of further curtailing the spread of the disease.
