The Delta State House of Assembly on Thursday suspended Hon. Edoja Akpodiete, representing Ughelli North I State Constituency for six months, for alleged gross misconduct.
Akpodiete’s suspension followed a motion moved by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Basil Ganagana.
The House had on March 5 suspended the lawmaker for one month for violating its rules and regulations.
Moving the motion, Ganagana said that the suspension of the lawmaker would enable him to take correction for his misconduct.
Ganagana said that the suspension would also serve as a deterrent to other members, who would want to sabotage the efforts of the legislature.
He alleged that some members of the House had been plotting to impeach the Speaker, Hon. Victor Ochei, in spite of the achievements recorded by the Assembly under Ochei’s leadership.
The motion, seconded by Hon. Martin Okonta, representing Ika South State Constituency, was unanimously adopted.
The House also passed into law, a bill amending the Remuneration, Salaries, Allowances, Gratuity and Pensions of Public Office Holders Law 2013.
The passage of the bill was sequel to the presentation of a report on the amendment bill by the Chairman, House Committee on Establishment, Ethics and Privileges, Hon. Pat Ajudua.
Meanwhile, the Assembly has adjourned plenary to October 15 to enable members to participate in the bye-election for the Delta Central Senatorial seat, scheduled for October 5.
The speaker said that the adjournment was equally to enable members to participate in the 2013 International Bar Association conference as well as this year’s Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference.
