A leading contestant for the post of the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Raymond Dokpesi, advanced his campaign into Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, on Monday.
Dokpesi and his entourage were met by a surging crowd of party supporters, mostly women and youths.
In a statement by the spokesperson of the Raymond Dokpesi Campaign Organisation, Omor Bazuaye, Dokpesi lamented the situation in which the party has found itself.
He said mistakes that needed to be corrected were made along the line, adding that it is up to the people to make the necessary changes.
He said: “The party is badly battered.
“There are series of court cases aimed at distracting the party.
“The PDP that was formed in 1998 is not exactly the same that we now have.
“If we have made any mistakes in the past, we should be making effort to reverse the situation and not worsen it with court cases.”
Dokpesi is however optimistic that with him as the National Chairman, PDP would rise and return in no time to winning ways.
He said he knows the wish of detractors of the party is for the PDP to die.
“PDP will not die,” he said.
For the party not to die, Dokpesi believes it has to be reformed and rebranded.
He recommended a new order that would allow for level playing field and wider inclusiveness for women and youths.
Dokpesi pleaded for votes, reeling out testimonies of his accomplishments both in business and politics, credentials he believes is sufficient to run the affairs of the party.
After taking tough questions from his case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to rumours of him stepping down, Dokpesi was endorsed by delegates, swelling his support base in the run off to the convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
With the huge reception and support, Dokpesi said he is emboldened to face other candidates at the convention.
