No fewer than 10 persons were reported killed when members of dreaded sect, Boko Haram, attacked Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Saturday morning.
The attack is coming a day after President Muhammadu Buhari declared a fresh war against the insurgents.
Buhari had in his inauguration speech declared the sect as godless and directed the military high command to relocate its headquarters to Maiduguri.
In Saturday’s attack, the insurgents were said to have stormed Maiduguri with bombs and heavy gunfire.
A report by The Punch quoted a member of the youth vigilance group as saying some insurgents attempted to invade the troubled town at about 12.50am on Saturday from the Ajilari Cross and Bintu Sugar areas of the town.
He said the soldiers quickly responded and engaged them before they could advance and overrun the town.
The source added that the fight lasted for about two hours, subsiding at about 2.50am.
