The Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria in Borno have commanded the National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control over its campaign against unwholesome products.
Alhaji Lawal Dan-Gashuwa, the Chairman of the association, gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri on Tuesday.
According to him, the exercise will enhance the quality bakery operations in the state.
He said some of the bakeries in the state were sealed for operating under poor sanitation and unhygienic condition as well as failure to comply with NAFDAC’s operational standard.
Dan-Gashuwa noted that the agency had also ensured effective regulation of bakeries with a view to encouraging processing of hygienic and nutritional bread.
He said: “The move by NAFDAC is in the right direction, aimed to protect the interest of consumers.’’
The chairman pledged support to the agency, to enable it discharge its duties effectively.
Also, NAFDAC’s Coordinator, Nasiru Mato, told NAN that that over 600 bakeries had not renewed their licences with the agency in the state.
Mato also said that the agency had so far closed 40 bakeries for operating with expired licences; fake label, poor sanitation and hygiene.
He said: “We asked water processors, confectioneries and bakeries to renew their registration and comply with standard operational guidelines.”
He warned that the agency would not condone violation of its rules.
According to him, the agency will embark on a comprehensive exercise to check circulation of substandard and unwholesome products in the state.
