The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives in Zamfara State on Wednesday threatened to stop work if the state government failed to implement the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for its members.
The health workers had gone on strike in June 2012 and another between March 27 and April 8 this year on the matter.
The Chairman of the association, Malam Bashir Mafara, who issued the threat in Gusau at a news briefing, accused the state government of failing to honour all the pledges it made to the association in their previous negotiations.
According to Mafara, the association took the decision to resume strike “soon” after several efforts to convince the state government to implement the new salary structure failed.
He said Zamfara State was the only state in Nigeria that was yet to implement the CONHESS.
Marafa also accused the state government of “arbitrarily” reducing the salaries of the health workers in September and October this year.
He said: “We are appealing to the general public to bear with us.
“It is not our wish to continue with the strike, but we have no option other than to resume the strike action in order to press for the implementation of the new salary structure.”
Reacting to the development, the state Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Kabir Janyau, told NAN in a telephone interview that the association did not follow due process in its agitation for the new salary.
Janyau, however, said the government would meet with the representatives of the health workers to address the issue.
