The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport witnessed an upsurge of activities on Wednesday as scores of travellers besieged the airport to travel to different parts of the country for the yuletide celebrations.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the traffic was more on the departure section of the domestic wing.
NAN checks with many airlines revealed that they were fully booked for Wednesday up to Sunday, with the exception of Lagos bound flights.
An airport official who spoke incognito told NAN that Yola in Adamawa State and Owerri in Imo State bound flights were fully booked up to Sunday.
The official added that the heavy traffic commenced on Wednesday afternoon, adding that all airlines were operating normal flights with no delays or cancellations.
Abdullahi Saroke, the Assistant Station Manager of Azman Airlines, said though the turnout of passengers had improved considerably, the season had witnessed low passenger inflow generally.
Saroke said the airline had maintained its safety standards as well as customer service regulations, adding that there was no fare hike.
“The movement is above normal today even though it is low compared to what we normally experience at this time of the season,” he said.
Some of the passengers told NAN that they booked ahead of time.
Kike Olusola said she was travelling to Ilorin to celebrate the Christmas and New Year with her loved ones and urged every Nigerian to use the period to pray for the country.
Olusola said she booked for the flight ahead of time because she expected a heavy movement of travellers in the yuletide.
She called on the Federal Government to pay serious attention to infrastructure development of the nation’s airport as well as ensure that safety standards were maintained by the airlines.
Another passenger, Andrew Audu, also urged the government to complete all ongoing projects at the airport as quickly as possible.
Audu decried the gridlock caused by construction at the airport.
Audu called on all Nigerians, irrespective of their religion, to use the opportunity of the long holiday to pray for the peace and progress of the nation.
