We will ensure independence of LGs, says Fayose

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has given the assurance that his administration will ensure the independence of local governments so that they can really function as a tier of government.
The governor said anything short of that would mean whatever is done at that level is mere window dressing.
Fayose spoke in Ado-Ekiti at the weekend during his maiden meeting with the newly-inaugurated elected council chairmen in the state.
According to a statement on Sunday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, Fayose said local government system should be truly allowed to function in accordance with the constitution for democratic gains to get down to the people in the grassrooot.
Responding to various questions and observations from the council chairmen, Fayose advised them to settle down and study the situations in their councils and start work.
He said: “Time is not anybody’s friend, so we have to note that. However, I will advice you to first study the situation in your individual councils. You must be ready to learn and take advice. The state government will collaborate with you where necessary.
“I am assuring you that the state government will not interfere in matters that you as local government chairmen are supposed to be masters. The local government system must be‎ given independence to really function. On the issue of employing junior workers to do some labour work, that may depend on the internally generated revenue at your disposal, which may mean you can engage them on contract basis.”
In his observation, the Chairman of Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area, Dapo Olagunju, asked whether the state government could assist them financially for some months for them to settle down.
In his reply, Governor Fayose said since each tier of government has its statutory allocation and as such they must base their expenses on their allocations and IGR.
He advised them to collaborate with security agencies in their areas as well as community leaders to stem the tide of Fulani cattle‎ rearers posing security threats in some parts of the state.
