The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday restated the need for everyone to come together and address environmental issues through multifarious approaches of human intervention and sustained advocacy.
The Governor spoke through the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, at the commissioning of repaired embankment failures located within the premises of Leadership Training Centre, Apapa.
Sanwo-Olu added that the newly repaired embankment will effectively address the problem of erosion, which had posed serious threat to lives and properties in the area.
He commended the Government through the Ecological Fund Office for the prompt response and leadership, which played a key role not only in ensuring the successful completion of the project, but also averting the calamities that would have resulted from negligence and inaction on her parts.
He said: “As a State, we are appreciative of this very important intervention which would impact not only the training centre but also the surrounding environs.”
Earlier in his address, a member of Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Senator Olalekan Mustapha, said the project was one of the 16 ecological intervention approved by President Muhammadu Buhari, which was subsequently awarded by Federal Executive Council in March 2019.
Mustapha added that the project is expected to address the devastating effect of erosion and flood menace in the School Community.
He implored the community to take ownership of the the project by preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels, stressing that it is the responsibility of the community to maintain the project to ensure its sustainability.
