One of the robbers recently arrested by the Lagos State Police Command has revealed why most robbers target the Automated Teller Machines over the weekend.
The robbery suspect, who simply wishes to be addressed as Tallest, was among those who attacked Access Bank in Ayobo, Lagos State.
According to Tallest, that operation was the last he carried out before his arrest.
Tallest, who said he detests guns, explained that whenever he goes with any gang to rob, it was usually to attack an ATM.
He said: “I don’t carry gun.
“Whenever we surround a bank, I am usually the last person to step down from our car.
“I’m the person who used to carry the cylinder, which is used to blast the ATM.
“Yes, I’m the person who used to blast the machines.
“To cut and blast ATM doesn’t take me more than 10 minutes.
“We deliberately attack ATM on weekends because we know that banks used to load ATM for weekend operations when they won’t be around.
“We also always try to make sure that we attack ATM that is working.
“That is the one that has money.
“Before we attack any ATM, we first pay a visit to it like any other customer.
“We would ask the security guards if the ATM is working.
“We go for such operation with confidence because we know that the police no longer guard banks anymore at night.”
Tallest said that though he had been robbing, he had never been able to do anything worthwhile with his money.
He said that he spends his money on paying for hotel rooms, which is where he stays rather than rent an apartment.
Whenever there is an operation, his gang members would call him on phone and tell him where to meet them.
