Member representing Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Dennis Rowland Caesar, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party (LP) following his recent suspension by his ward chapter over alleged anti-party activities.
Caesar, who had publicly endorsed Governor Alex Otti’s second-term bid, announced his defection during the House of Assembly plenary in Umuahia, citing the governor’s impressive performance in less than two years as his reason for leaving the PDP.
Reacting to the defection, the Abia State PDP insisted that Caesar had forfeited his seat and called on INEC to conduct a by-election.
In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Eric Iwuagwu, the party argued that under Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), lawmakers who defect without a division in their party must vacate their seat.
“The seat and mandate belong to the PDP. Hon. Caesar’s continued occupancy of his seat is unconstitutional. We are formally petitioning INEC to declare his seat vacant and commence the process of a by-election,” Iwuagwu stated.

The PDP also vowed to take legal action to enforce the constitutional provision requiring defected lawmakers to relinquish their positions.
