Senate suspends plenary over killing across states, holds security summit

The Senate on Wednesday unanimously resolved to suspend plenary session for Wednesday and Thursday next week for the purpose of holding a national summit on rising insecurity across Nigeria.
The Senate decision was sequel to a motion raised by Senator Shuaibu Lau over ongoing attacks in Lau town and other communities within Benue State.
Many senators who spoke on the motion claimed that armed Fulani herdsmen are members of Boko Haram terrorists group who flew from the North East.
Senator Ben Murray-Bruce asked President Muhammadu Buhari to perform his responsibility as commander-in-chief of the armed forces by protecting Nigerians.
Murray-Bruce also added that any head of security agency that can’t perform his duty should be removed with immediate effect.
He said: “”It seems to me that Nigeria is becoming lawless country.
“A country with no rules and regulations, a country where laws are not adhered to, a country where there is no consequence for bad behaviour.
“It is either we have a government, security agents or we do not.
“These are fundamental issues at stake today because everyday since we got here, someone has gotten killed, raped, throat slit, killed at gun point and everyday we have resolutions and nothing is being done.
“The Minister of Defence should tell us what he is doing.
“If the cabinet is incompetent, then we should fire them.
“We are becoming a barbaric nation no respect for life.
“The executive should speak today and explain to Nigerians what is happening in this country.”
Also in his comment on the security situation in the country, Senator Kabiru Marafa revealed that foreign militia groups are now in charge of his home state.
Marafa said the the militia group are armed with guns and administer justice in place of emir and traditional rulers, adding that the group had presence in all local governments in Zamfara State.
He therefore called for urgent intervention to free them from their abductors.
Also speaking, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha called on the Federal Government to checkmate the activities of armed Fulani herdsmen, whom he claimed are members of Boko Haram.
