More facts about the last days of former Senate Leader and Waziri of Ilorin, Dr. Olusola Abubakar Saraki, have continued to emerge even as Nigerians from all strata of human endeavour are still paying condolence visits to his country home in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Recalling his interaction with the late political titan of Kwara State few days before he died on Wednesday in Lagos, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of River State, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, said Saraki told him he was proud to be a Nigerian and was going to die as a Nigerian.
Amaechi disclosed this when he paid a condolence visit to his Kwara State counterpart, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, adding: “I can recall the last time I spoke with him, he admonished that we should do everything possible to keep the country together as the cost of disintegration is better imagined than experienced.”
Amaechi noted that the late Senate Leader sustained the integrity of politics in Nigeria through his passion for the promotion of the wellbeing of the poor.
He urged the political class to sustain the legacies of Saraki by promoting the welfare of the poor.
Speaking earlier, the Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, described the demise of Saraki as a huge loss because he meant so much to the downtrodden and the privileged few.
In his response, Ahmed said Saraki was a fulfilled man because he succeeded in leaving behind an enduring legacy of people-oriented politics.
