Following the closure of Nigeria’s land borders to ensure peaceful and violence free conduct of the April 11 polls, soldiers have been drafted to Seme, Badagry in Lagos State.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria, who visited the border town on Friday, reports that armed soldiers were seen at strategic locations in the area.
Trading and other commercial activities coupled with heavy vehicular movement that characterized everyday life in the border town were absent.
Soldiers and some men of the para-military agencies were seen searching people and cars on road blocks mounted in the area.
A soldier, who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity, said the measures were taken to forestall break down of law and order during the polls.
He said: “The border has been closed since yesterday, so what we are doing here is to ensure that people comply with the directive and ensure that law and order prevail during the polls.
“We have mounted road blocks in all strategic locations around the border and we would be here till when the border re-opens.”
