Police arrest vigilantes for murder of two brothers
The police in Abeokuta, Ogun State have arrested two members of the Ogun Vigilante Services for allegedly killing two brothers, police spokesman, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said on Sunday.
Adejobi told newsmen that the suspects committed the alleged offence in the earlier hours of Sunday at 18a, Sorinola Avenue, Ori Iyanrin area of Abeokuta.
He said: “The Adigbe Police Division received a distress call that two men had been shot dead by officials of VSO.
“We then moved in to the scene and made some discoveries.
“The two officials who allegedly committed the crime had been arrested and are currently with the State Crime Investigation Department.
“Also, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, has ordered full investigation into the matter.
“We have a case of murder and we want to assure the general public that a thorough investigation shall be carried out in the matter, just as ordered by the CP.”
Adejobi added that two pump action guns were recovered from the VSO members who are currently being interrogated by the police command’s CID.
VSO officials had responded to a distress call by the deceased’s neighbours after sighting suspicious movement in their compound.
The brothers, Akeem Usman, 32, and Raji Moruf, 29, were said to have bled to death from gun injuries.
In his reaction through a signed statement, the Commander of the VSO, Major Femi Bisiriyu (rtd.), described the incident as that of a mistaken identity and unfortunate.
Bisiriyu claimed that his men had responded to a distress call in the area when the incident occurred, regretting that the deceased were shot dead in error.
Bisiriyu explained that his men had opened fired “in self-defence” when it was noticed that one of the deceased was holding an object like a gun while trying to open the gate.
He said: “The area has been known to be volatile in recent times and has become a target for armed robbers.
“So, when a distress call was received, our men traced the place.”
Usman, according to sources, got married on December 1, 2012.
He works in Lagos and had only gone to Abeokuta for a function on Saturday.
