Okon not mature to handle Falcons – Mabo

Former Super Falcons Coach, Ismaila Mabo, has advised the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation to leave Coach Edwin Okon to continue to handle age grade female national teams for now.
Mabo said Okon still has to learn more on the job before he can handle the senior female national team, the Super Falcons.
Speaking with the media in Abuja last week, Mabo said that the NFF had not given the women team half the attention they give their male counterparts, noting that it is disheartening to see the Super Falcons struggling in Africa that they had dominated for 20 years.
He stated that the coach that took the Super Falcons to Japan showed his immaturity and was also biased in selecting 12 of the players from his club, Rivers Angels, in the 21-member squad.
Mabo said: “They say he has been winning with Rivers Angel and was the Under-20 team coach that took the Falconets to the World Cup. Is that enough to make him coach of senior national women team? Favouritism got him there and he applied same to select 11 first team players and a reserve player from one club for national team. No you don’t do that.
“NFF should look up to some of the ex-Super Falcons who are now coaches to salvage the situation. That Eucharia Uche did not do too well does not mean that other women would not succeed. We have Mercy Akide Udoh, Florence Omagbemi Ajumah, Lami and others who are certified coaches
“These players are well exposed playing and later coaching in America and Europe, so they should be given the chance to coach the nationals and they would deliver. NFF must check the slide of the women football by taking a decision.”
