The National Association of Ogun State Students has commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for the timely appointment of transition committees for the 20 local government councils in the state.
The National President of the association, Ogunrombi Oluwagbemileke, gave the commendation in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Saturday.
Oluwagbemileke explained that it was important to make the local governments to function effectively as it remained the closest government to the people at the grassroots.
He explained that the creation of local council development areas by the immediate past administration of Senator Ibikunle Amosun was ill-conceived.
He noted that the students’ body, as key stakeholders in policy making and governance, saw meaningful development in the running of local governments during the administrations of former Governors Olusegun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel.
“NAOSS had sometimes ago appealed to the governor to, in the interest of grassroots development, return the 20 local government structure in the state as used by Osoba and Daniel,” he said.
He called on the state governor to ensure that appropriate assistance were given to the transition committees for them to perform before the conduct of fresh local government elections across the state.
The NAOSS national president appealed to the transition committee members to be prudent, transparent and focused, and to also ensure that both students, youths and women were empowered.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the governor had, on Friday, appointed transition committees of five members each for the 20 local councils in the state.
