Leaders of the 389 ethnic nationalities in Nigeria are expected to meet at the Thisday Dome in the Central Business District of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss how to further engage the process and modalities of the forthcoming national conference proposed by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
It will be recalled that the recent announcement of the national conference modalities had generated some misgivings among ethnic nationality groups, with some of the leaders already threatening to mobilise for a boycott of the national confab
According to a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the Secretary General of the Ethnic Nationalities Movement, Michael Orobator, this emerging trend among others have necessitated the intervention to urgently bring together self determination groups and indigenous nationalities in Nigeria for a two-day national consultation to ensure that the proposals of the Federal Government is further finetuned and owned by the nationalities and peoples of Nigeria in making the proposed national confab a success.
Leaders of delegations from the diverse nationalities and indigenous peoples of Nigeria expected to lead the national consultation, themed: “Towards a truly Representative National Conference,” include elder statesman and eminent jurist, Prof. Ben Nwabueze; Afenifere chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo; Prof. Jerry Gana, the Chair of the Middle Belt Forum; retired General Alani Akinriade; retired Commodre Dan Suleiman; Solomon Asemota (SAN); leaders of The Patriots; and leaders of the Pro-National Conference Organisation.
The statement by Orobator added: “Members of the fourth estate of the realm (The Press) are also invited to cover the historic ethnic nationalities conference expected to commence at 10am daily.
“This historic two-day conference promises to be very consultative in giving direction to the proposed national conference initiated by the Federal Government.”
