Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel, is set to quit the Super Eagles following the bickering that has engulfed the team in the recent time, The Eagle Online can report.
Mikel was said to be livid at the choice of Ahmed Musa as the new Super Eagles’ skipper, claiming that he had made his national team’s debut long before the winger was called up.
Checks revealed that Mikel made his national team debut on August 17, 2005 as a substitute against Libya, while Musa came into the fold five years later when he was invited by Swedish gaffer, Lars Largerback, ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but failed to make the final squad for the mundial.
Musa eventually won his first cap on August 5, 2010 in an AFCON 2012 qualifier against Madagascar.
Our source claimed that the new skipper was Mikel’s “boy” and it would be extremely difficult to lead or assert his authority over the Chelsea man in camp.
The source said: “Recent developments in the Eagles are beginning to give Mikel some concerns and he is thinking of staying away to further concentrate on his club career.
“It is a common knowledge that national team leaders are chosen on seniority but that was not the case in Mikel’s case and the player is feeling cheated and taken for granted.
“I doubt if Musa can sanction a Mikel who he still addresses as ‘Senior Man’ in camp. It is a bad choice and the coach ought to have made his consultations before making public the new skipper.”
