Man to hang for murder in Ekiti

An Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State High Court on Tuesday sentenced one Mayowa Omolayo, 30, to death by hanging for killing one Tayo Oluwabusuyi.
The state counsel, Babasoji Awe, had told the court that the convict committed the offence on May 30, 2009 at Igbo Oroke farm on Ilawe Road in Igede-Ekiti.
Awe said that the accused, a blacksmith of 14 C, Ilamoye Street, Igede-Ekiti, on the said date killed Oluwabusuyi on his farm by slashing his throat three times with a machete.
The convict had confessed to entering the farm of the deceased to steal only to be accosted by him.
Omolayo claimed that the deceased was the first to attack him before he overpowered and killed him.
Before the delivery of the judgment, the counsel to the accused, Chris Omokhafe, had urged the court to temper justice with mercy.
But the presiding judge, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, held that all the essential ingredients of murder had been established in the case.
Ogunmoye said: “The prosecution had done all that was expected of him to prove the case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.
“The sentence of the court upon you is that you be hanged by the neck until you will be dead.
“May the Lord have mercy on your soul.”
