Lagos warns public on consumption of expired digestive biscuits

The Lagos State Government on Monday warned members of the public to be wary of re-packaged expired digestive biscuits presently in markets across the state.
Olayinka Egbeyemi, the Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Task Force, gave the warning in a statement.
Egbeyemi, a Superintendent of Police, said two suspects had been arrested for allegedly re-packaging and selling suspected expired biscuits to members of the public around Mosafejo Market in Oshodi.
He said one Bimbo Oyewole was arrested at Oshodi under bridge, while cleaning off the expired date boldly written on a pack of digestive biscuits.
The task force chairman said the suspect led the task force officials to arrest another suspect, Rabiu Olalekan.
The statement said the suspects claimed they bought cartons of the expired biscuits before demolition of Mosafejo Market, Oshodi by the state government in August 2015.
Egbeyemi was quoted as having said: “They claimed they could not sell the biscuits before it expired, so they decided to change the expiry dates and re-packaged them for consumption by members of the public.
“They confessed selling a pack of the re-packaged digestive biscuits at N1, 900 as against N4, 500 for good ones.”
Meanwhile, the task force said it arrested 149 suspected miscreants last week.
The statement said 138 of the arrested miscreants had been charged for various environmental offences in the last one week.
Egbeyemi said 11 of those arrested were set free after identification.
It stated that 19 motorcycles were impounded for contravening Lagos State Road traffic law.
