Lagos constructs 211 roads in four months

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said that it was currently constructing 211 roads with a total length of 211.337 km in various parts of the state.
The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, announced this during the 2014 Ministerial briefing in Lagos.
Hamzat said a total of 105 roads were also constructed in 2013.
According to him, 150 roads were constructed between 2007 and 2011, while 161 were constructed from 2011 till date.
He, however, debunked allegations that the state government was neglecting rural roads, saying that the interests of all residents of the state were captured in road infrastructure development.
Hamzat said: “It is a myth that the state government is elitist in road construction.
“We have touched every local government in terms of road construction.
“The choice of roads to undertake is a function of possible network connectivity, traffic improvement, necessity, traffic volume, road capacity, flood control and management.”
Hamzat announced that 92,339 jobs were created from the ministry’s projects from January 2013 to April, 2014.
He noted that the state government was upgrading facilities in the construction of Glover Road on the Island to meet international standard.
The commissioner explained that facilities such as walkways and bicycle lanes were introduced as part of the upgrade.
He said that the design for the construction of a pedestrian bridge at the Ojodu Berger was almost completed.
Hamzat said three new pedestrian bridges were also awarded, to be constructed on the Apapa-Oshodi, Alapere and Oworonshoki axis.
